Every time you lift your legs up to take another step, you are lifting your body up ever so slightly, and that burns more calories. Also, you burn more calories in the same amount of time because you are moving faster than you would walking, so if you’re traveling twice the speed, you burn twice the calories because of that fact alone. However, add both the vertical movement and speed together, and running (even slow running) will burn about four times the calories of walking on average.
