The old postage stamps book I bought from Amazon has now arrived. The name of the book is the British Stamp Market Values of 2009. I have used it to go through my Grandad’s old postage stamp collection and marked off each of the stamps that my Grandad had.

It was a fun activity to do. I did it with my girlfriend and it took me a couple of evenings to go through them all. There is a special edition album and some foreign set but apart from those we marked nearly all of the stamps. It think the special old postage stamps collection will require further investigation.

I have now been through and seen my Grandad’s old postage stamps one by one.

He catalogued his in the same way as I found an old Stanley Gibbons price booklet called Collect British Stamps from 1980. He had crossed off a number of stamps which he collected. I saw some old postage stamps in that book that I liked the look of and wouldn’t mind adding to my collection.

There was another book in his collection that is a little special. It was called the Price List for British Colonial Stamps and Foreign Sets. The book looked in mint condition and because it was part of his collection I assumed that it was about 30 years old.

The last date of stamps in the book was from 1948. I can’t believe that this book must be nearly 60 years old!

I now have a clear picture in my head how I will add to my Grandad’s old postage stamps. I do want the collection to remain personal to the family but I also want to add to it in a way that will add to its value. I will do a few first day covers but that I think I will move on to miniature sets, presentation packs. I think being less personal will help with the value.
