You want to know what’s really at the crest of model locomotive world? What’s coming down the pike that has every model trainer tossing and turning with anticipation?  What gauge of toy train do hobbyists go coo coo for?  Alright, here it is: s gauge model railroads. You got it?  You don’t even know what size that is, do you? Do you even know about different scales?  Alright so here’s what you need to know for your next toy train railroader’s meeting:

Two words, “American Flyer”:

This style of locomotives has been enshrined in the hall of fame of model locomotives.  But a big explanation why this gauge is so popular is because after having been decommissioned during WWII, American Flyer retooled and marketed a new line of state of the art locomotives in s gauge.  This was in huge part an attempt to compete with Lionel’s O gauge who was the king of the roost at the time. S gauge is an “inbetween” gauge, way larger than HO but smaller than Lionel’s O.  S scale is one 64th the size of a real train whereas Lionel’s O gauge is one 48th the size.   That means that S gauge is a bit more user friendly in terms of the smallest space suggestions for the track but still big enough for those of us that are into the arts and crafts aspect of toy training. These locomotives are a lot of fun to color and detail.

S gauge is rare:

Another reason that s gauge has gained such a wide following is that s gauge is uncommon.  American Flyers are basically the sole type of trains that were mass produced in this gauge and even they were only manufactured in this gauge for a small period just after WWII. That means there are not that many vintage s scale American Flyer trains.   This also signifies that those hobbyists of the s scale trains in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s had to make most of their replacement tracks from scratch and to meticulously maintain their locomotives since replacement parts in the pre-google era were difficult to come by.   All of this has made American Flyer the Holy Grail of toy trains for many fans.

American Flyers are about to enter the market again:

Lionel LLC, who took over the American Flyer company when it went bankrupt in 1966 has recently started re-releasing popular American Flyer locomotives.  The great success of these releases has driven Lionel to promise to bring back the s gauge locomotives that committed fans are so infatuated with.  It might not be long before we have to make way for s gauge as yet another main scale in the toy training world.

Now’s the time to put your chips down if you want to cash in early on this tip.  If you want to say “I told you so” to your toy train friends you should jump in now.  Get one of these flap jacks while they’re still hot. It’s like the coffee house fad of the early 90s.  Not only that, American Flyer and s scale just rock even if nobody were into them.

Finally came across a way you can combine your wife’s love of back yard sun bathing and your love of model locomotives, huh?  These g scale toy trains are definitely the trains for your family! Your toy train hobby doesn’t have to imprison you down in the basement with the Morlocks anymore. Now it’s just an issue of how to do it? Your train area will have a major say in the kind of design you go with.  That said, there are some fundamental considerations when you are designing your g gauge train layout.

Let your hobby space have some say over your g gauge track:  Weather and topography should play into the choices you make about your g scale track design. If you live in a moist, frigid climate and have flurries and rain as a fairly constant blanket for your yard, consider having a covered track.  But if you live in the hills of Berkeley or San Francisco and your back yard is somewhat tilted  you will want to work with this as well.  The topographical idiosyncrasies of your back yard are the main limit to your g scale model railroad layouts.  These topographical features, however, can also greatly help the realism and the complexity of our railroad layouts.

Play peek-a-boo with your track setup:  One of the best ways of [adding|maximizing|increasing] interest to our g [scale|gauge] model railroad [layouts|designs|setups] is to use the [flora|bushes and trees|hedges and plants] of our back yards to enhance the visual [interest|excitement|enjoyment] of our track [plan|design|layout].

Snaking a track behind a row of bushes or shrubs can add visual complexity to our tracks by obscuring our view of the train and track. The lazy way is to run your track through a bush, but if you’re really ambitious you might create a desert pass or sharp  gorge right in your back yard.  There is something really captivating too about seeing the g scale locomotive make its way obscurely through the dark shadows behind a line of bushes.

Don’t fight with the big stuff:  If you have a completely empty yard then this is not a consideration, but since most of us have things other than trains and grass in your back yards, your best bet is to take these backyard landmarks and work with them. Got statues, let them take a role in your plan. A train track placed around a trickling stone fountain or past a spitting stone cherub can make for a particularly eye catching feature.

Add artificial features to your backyard plan:  Add scaled trees, little towns, train stations, hills and waterfalls and all the same sorts of details and features both reproducing nature and culture, just as you would to any other train scale. Enlist the help of one of the more talented members of the family and the whole experience can really become a cherished family memory.  It is much more rewarding to spend in rainy Sunday afternoon detailing and coloring a model train whistle stop than watching reruns of I Love Lucy.

G gauge model locomotives are so popular right now, you shouldn’t be surprised if you acquaintances are willing to shell out cold hard cash to come over and see your design.  But the real reason to take part in this great hobby is that it is just good old fashioned fun!

Wine glass, ale glass, shot glass collectors the world over are dealing with more mess than we can imagine.  Can these glasses be used for creating homemade candles? Yes!  Comprehend the following tips on how to craft container candles using your old glass, some wax and a lot of creative thinking!

The least complex container type to make is shot glass candle.  You don’t need much wax and wick to make a shot glass candle.  If you want to have more fun, make ale glass homemade candles!  Colored wax and a longer candle wick is needed if you’re using beer glasses for unique candle creation.

Be imaginative and dye the candle waxes according to the variety of beverage you want to simulate.  The more creative you are, the more your glass homemade candles will look like the real thing!  Here are some more tips for you if you want to use your collectible glasses for candle making.  Melt the candle wax like you would melt butter. Never let it get too hot beyond the boiling point.

As soon as the wax is evenly thawed, turn off the flame and pour the candle wax.  If you are going to recycle old candles, melt the same types of waxes together.  You can use wax crayons for dyes, however make sure to use crayons sparingly if you want your homemade candles to be functional.  Crayon wax can keep your candles from burning properly if used in large amounts.

See-through glasses are best if you want to use colored wax.
Use different coloring materials or colors for appropriate designs.  If you want your candle wax to look like ale, use yellow or light brown dye.  Trim the candle wick after you have positioned it in the center of the candle and the candle wax has cooled.  Bulky glasses are safer to use than fine ones.  Heat can destroy glass, so be careful.

Add warning labels to your container candles if you are sending them out as gifts.  Don’t let the candle burn all the way to the bottom of the glass.  Never let the flame touch the sides of the glass.  Get top grade, flame resilient pans and containers for liquifying and transferring the wax.  Plastics should not be utilized because the hot wax can dissolve these.

It’s quite easy to make soya jar candles. First, the material you’re using, soya wax, is best for newbies. You can thaw out soy wax even without a double boiler. Next, you do not have to worry about the form of your homemade candles for the reason that the wax will be enclosed in a jar. The exquisiteness of the jar you’ve chosen will take care of the beauty. Soy candle wax is much superior to the other kinds of waxes for candle crafting.

In general, waxes that came from plant products give off a reduced amount of soot. You will perceive the difference in air quality as soon as you light the soy jar candle. However, for your candle producing business, there are some more things you should take note of when creating a soy jar candle.

Soy candle wax can be found in block and in chip form. The flake form is more effortless to utilize than the block form. The most important part of scent addition is figuring out the suitable ratio of wax and fragrance oil. Using your own mix of fragrances is the secret to make your own specialty scented soya candles. These fragrance oils can be purchased from a range of places that market perfume kits, and can even be purchased from abroad.

When buying essences, make sure that they are compatible with soy wax. On average you’ll need one 1 fl ounce of fragrance oil to scent 16 ounces of soya wax. Jars for soya candles should be dirt free, dried out and at room temperature. There is no need to heat the jar.

But, you might need to hasten the ventilation of the inside of the container by baking the glassware in the oven. It is essential to remove all water in the jar prior to transferring the wax. Hot wax can form froth when mixed with water.

Another essential aspect of soya jar candle making is deciding what colorant to use. Coloring materials come in diverse kinds. Like candle wax, these dyes are obtainable in block form or in pellet variety. Coloring materials are also offered in fluid form.

Next up, let us talk about the candle wick you will be utilizing for your soya jar candle. The diameter of your jar handcrafted candle must be proportional to the dimension of the wick you are utilizing.

You can purchase candle wicks and candle wick pins separately but the most convenient approach is to buy candle wicks with anchors. Candle wick anchors are best for container candles because you don’t want to risk not centering the wick. Before each use, trim the wick to 1/4″, and by no means move or re-light ’til heat is off and wax is completely solid. Make sure your wick protrudes from the top of the candle jar, but not too long that the heat dies before it touches the candle wax. However, if the wick is nothing more than a small protrusion, the candle wax will melt around it and put out the heat almost as soon as the candle is lit.

If you are making these candles for selling, you must have some notice labels made and stick them at the bottom of your soya jar candles. This is so you can tell your clientele about how to care for the jar homemade candles. On that piece of label, you can put some precautions and warnings. Never burn your candle on or near anything combustible, or for more than 5 hours at any given time. Give directions on how the user can create a melt pool and how to get rid of it so that the full fragrance of the handcrafted candle is thrown. It is wise to place the soya jar candle on a heat resistant surface prior to burning.

If you are reading this article, chances are you have a creative soul and love to let your immagination soar - because - why else would you be visiting a site aimed at crafts, hobbies and other such creative pursuits? You may well be  talented and artistic - but have your children inherited your creativeness and resourcefullness? And if they haven't - are there ways you can stimulate this part of their lives? Here is what you can do…

Encourage your children to be creative by providing them with the time, resurces and the space for making art.Set aside some interruption-free quality time for drawing, in a mess-proof zone – so that their creativity can run wild. Make sure you cover all surfaces so that any splashes of paint or scribbles of crayon are ‘caught’ – because  nothing squishes creativity more so than a parent saying “Don’t make a mess” every 2 minutes.

Choose the right drawing materials too as this is very  important. Many craft materials can be improvised, but when drawing tools and paper are required, opt for a small selection of good quality age-appropriate products, rather than loads of inferior products. Always ensure that you check safety information and follow instructions. During any ‘art-time’ children should always be surpervised because many necessary materials – such as crayons – pose a choking hazard.

Surroundings: As with writing or working at a computer, good posture and a comfortable position are important for drawing. With young children, a child-size table and chair is actually preferable to an easel. If the chair is a little high, provide a phone book as a footrest. A coffee table and an inexpensive plastic chair work well. A small kitchen storage trolley is ideal for containing supplies, or if space does not permit, a portable tackle box is a good option too. Messy toddlers may need a drop-cloth and supervision to avoid ink-stained walls, as even ‘washable’ pens often don’t deliver on that promise!

Art Materials: Avoid cheap markers, too-hard pencils and thin paints – these types of materials are discouraging to the child and therefore  a waste of money. Provide many sheets of blank paper to inspire their crativity and occasionally invest in a canvas so that your child can paint something and chances are you’ll want to hang it on your wall! Also provide coloring books or coloring pages – of which you’ll find plenty online. Granted – coloring pages are not so great for creativity, however they do provide children with the chance to practice their fine motor skills and sometimes it’s very relaxing and just what they need to simply color in without the ‘pressure’ of thinking about WHAT to draw.

For example little girls may enjoy coloring images of Barbie and at sites like Barbie Coloring Pages you’ll find the best Barbie party printables

When it comes to drawing and coloring, at each age/stage of your child’s life provide….

Toddlers

  • Child-safe markers and wipe-off boards
  • Chalk boards and safe chalk
  • Plain paper and coloring pages

Juniors

  • Sketchbook

Middle School

  • Graphite Pencils

  • Plain paper and coloring pages

High School

  • Sketchbook  or scrapbook
  • Quality drawing papers and boards
  • Graphite Pencils
  • Artists’ quality colored pencils
  • Illustration markers, marker paper
  • Pastel paper and hard pastels if liked
  • Plain paper and canvases to work on

All ages

  • Safe sharpeners, erasers, dusters, stencils and rulers
  • A  folder for storing large pieces
  • Storage boxes for smaller pieces
  • Consider photographing or scanning pieces for a permanent record.
